Hantavirus Case Definition and Reporting

Key points

  • Hantavirus disease is a nationally notifiable condition.
  • Health departments may report hantavirus disease through 1CDP, using Secure Access Management Services (SAMS), or via the hantavirus disease case report form.
  • CDC publishes weekly and annual surveillance data for hantavirus cases in the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System.

Case definition

The National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS) provides case definitions for and . Surveillance case definitions enable public health officials to classify and count cases based on the same criteria across reporting jurisdictions. Surveillance case definitions are not intended for healthcare providers when making a clinical diagnosis or determining how to meet an individual patient's health needs.

Reporting criteria

Hantavirus disease (disease caused by either HPS or non-HPS hantavirus infection) is a nationally notifiable condition. CDC monitors notifiable conditions at the national level to understand where diseases are occurring, how they can be prevented, and which groups are most heavily impacted.

Hantavirus disease is a reportable condition in many states and territories. In these jurisdictions, healthcare providers, hospitals, or laboratories must report hantavirus disease cases to their local health departments. Specific requirements for who must report cases and when vary by jurisdiction.

Case notification

The designates hantavirus disease as a nationally notifiable condition. If a patient meets , CSTE requests that information about the patient and disease be submitted to CDC.

Reporting methods

Health departments should report general information about the patient and disease to CDC through the NNDSS using National Electronic Telecommunications System for Surveillance (NETSS) messages or the .

Jurisdictional health departments can directly report cases via 1CDP through credentialing. To request 1CDP access, for more information about the system, or if there are other surveillance-related questions, health departments can contact CDC's Viral Special Pathogens Branch at spathinfo@cdc.gov.

Report forms

Health departments may also report hantavirus disease to the CDC using the Hantavirus disease Case Report Form (CRF) that can be completed electronically. While rare, hantavirus disease can often cause severe illness and the CRF allows us to collect more detailed epidemiological, clinical, and diagnostic information that is not otherwise reported to NNDSS. Collecting a more detailed record for each confirmed hantavirus case allows us to examine and identify factors associated with hantavirus infection over time in the U.S.

Completed forms can be securely emailed or faxed to CDC through the contacts listed on the form.

CDC surveillance data

CDC publishes weekly and annual surveillance data for hantavirus cases in the NNDSS notifiable infectious disease data tables. Aggregated data from CRFs is published here: Reported Cases of Hantavirus Disease.
